CFA UK Investment Management Certificate
The Investment Management Certificate (IMC) is administered by the CFA Society of the UK (CFA UK), whose main purpose is to foster and maintain high standards of professional ability and practice in investment analysis, portfolio management and related disciplines. It was introduced in 1994 as the benchmark competency examination for the Investment Management Regulatory Organisation and the Personal Investment Authority for those engaged in discretionary or advisory management of investments. The syllabus was significantly updated in December 2001, when the Financial Services Authority (FSA) became the single regulatory authority for the UK financial services industry, and again in 2007 in the light of changes in the industry. It reflects all changes to relevant laws, regulation and industry practice.
The IMC can be taken as a single examination or the two units that it comprises (Unit 1 — UK Regulation & Markets and Unit 2 — Investment Practice) can be taken separately. The full IMC is assessed through a three and a quarter hour examination containing 155 multiple choice questions (of which 15 are trial questions that do not count towards the candidate’s score). The examination covers all eight topics areas that make up the syllabus. Unit 1 is tested through an examination lasting an hour and five minutes containing 51 multiple choice questions (of which five are trial questions that do not count towards the candidate’s score). Unit 2 is tested through an examination lasting two hours and ten minutes containing 104 multiple choice questions (of which ten are trial questions that do not count towards the candidate’s score).
